Glass Partitioning

Glass Partitioning and Dry Joint Frameless GlazingGlass partitioning provides a modern and sophisticated solution to providing internal enclosures and wall partitions for a variety of applications. One of the clear benefits of using glass partitioning is that light can still pass through, thus creating a feeling of space and a light airy environment. The glass panes require a system of jointing to give strength to the overall partition where each abuts the other (discussed below), and for this Switchglass uses the latest in Dry Joint systems.

There are many different options when choosing the right glass for your partitioning project, which will vary according to your individual and legislative requirements. When you need absolute privacy you might choose sandblasted or diffused laminated glass. The latter will afford some degree of acoustic baffling; double glazed panelling will provide increased soundproofing.  For partial privacy, there are many very attractive, decorative adhesive films that may be applied; enquire about our range.

Alternatively, simple decorative designs or your company branding can be sandblasted on to the glass.

For clients who would like to embrace the latest in technology, Switchglass’ advanced Switchable Privacy Glass can be used to provide absolute privacy at the flick of a switch or touch of a button.

Single Skin Glass Panels

The maximum recommended height for single skin (as opposed to double glazed) toughened or laminated glass partitions are:

Thickness (mm) Height (mm)
10.00 2400
10.88 2400
12.00 3000
12.88 3000
15.00 3500
16.80 3600
19.00 4200

It is also recommended that glass is embedded at least 12mm into its supporting channel to hold the glass securely in place. For most applications the glass edge is flat polished with a standard back arris (bevel) for silicone butt jointing.

Dry Joint Frameless Glazing

Utilising our crystal-clear, easily installed acrylic dry jointing channel as a low-profile integral connector, we affect a discreet join that is virtually invisible between the panels achieving an overall, seamless finish.

Where required, we also produce edgework in the form of a precise size and/or angle on the back arris for specific dry joint systems such as angled or curved layouts.

Full height partitions will often require some form of manifestation or mark to meet current regulations and prevent people from walking into them. This can be achieved by sandblasting the surface of the glass with a manifestation of the customer’s own design, or by adhering some visible emblem on the door or partition at eye level.

Hollow Glass

Glass doors and windows are the primary means through which we commune with both the inside and the outside of a building, permitting light to flow into the interior (in daytime) and allowing us expansive views.

They can also be decorative, but the natural indoor and outdoor heat exchange means a great influx of heat in summer and a great outflow of valuable energy, through generated heat, in winter. This, traditionally, has led to wasteful energy consumption through the heating and cooling of buildings.

Insulating glass is the solution, providing energy-saving, environmental protection and comfort (noise reduction), yet still enabling us to commune clearly through our glass.

Insulating Glass, usually referred to as Double Glazed in Australia and New Zealand, also comes under the category of Hollow Glass, though this intriguing name refers also to a much broader category of glass products including bottles, glass spheres or bubbles.

Energy conservation of buildings is arguably a more important topic today and Hollow Glass (the IGU and Double Glazed Unit) continues to play an important role in this field. Over 30% of energy inside buildings flows away through doors and windows. This nagging fact alone ensures that the energy conservation capabilities of doors, windows and glass curtain walls will continue to be an important topic in the glass industry.

Double Glazed units need not be dull: spacing bars, made from fire-resistant macromolecule plastics or colourful aluminium, can be embedded within the hollow glass and can be different in colour and shape.

Low-E insulating glass filled with inert gas: Low-E coatings on glass effectively block heat radiation. Low-E Hollow Glass filled with inert gas can further reduce the direct transmission of heat energy and reduce the thermal transmission coefficient of glass. Hence the ‘Energy Efficiency’ tag I often apply to the product.

In order to achieve different effects, Hollow Glass units can also be combined with coated glass, toughened glass or laminated Switchable Privacy Glass to form various desirable composite products.

Switchglass Moving Ahead

Arrival of Heatbox - Laminating Plant

New Laminating Plant

Since taking on the mantle of Switchglass a year or two ago, we have grown considerably and our team has been on a rapid learning curve ever since.

From our genesis twenty one years ago as Secure Glass – a tightly managed and successful glazing company still catering to clients in Perth, Western Australia – Switchglass now deals with orders and quotes from clients all around the globe. Our switchable privacy glass products can be supplied competitively to all points of the compass, and yes, that includes points on land, sea and air (more on the latter two – ‘marine craft’ and ‘aeroplanes’, later). For this to happen with any practicality it was necessary for us to be in the age of the Internet, Satellite Technology and Mobile Telephony. Thanks to this technology, and our collaboration with global partners and other experts in the field, we have been able to satisfy our international clients’ requirements just as we would if we were dealing with a client from around the block.

The Future

The new laminating plant that we will shortly be incorporating into our factory will give us a more competitive edge with all laminated glass product for the local market, especially Switchable Privacy Glass, and, perhaps more importantly, enable us to cope even more effectively and efficiently with clients in our own Asia Pacific region – our back yard, so to speak.

As well as our namesake product, Switchable Privacy Glass, our team is gearing up to produce a wide range of laminated glass product in-house. The market for Privacy Glass and custom laminated glass products is quite diverse and growing daily.

In extending our borders beyond Perth to the globe at large we have already tapped into the marine (as in boats) market and are vigorously pursuing the avionics industry (specifically aeroplane windows) and train windows. The latter two require a particularly tough type of laminate structure to make the windows bullet-resistant (Bullet Resistant Glass) or hurricane-proof (Cyclone Resistant Glass) because of the speed at which the vehicles travel. While this specific product is not strictly glass but is constructed using sheets made of a polycarbonate composition, we will be ideally set-up to comply. The boat market interests us in particular because luxury yacht owners are already taking an interest in Switchable Privacy Glass in their craft’s cockpits and below-deck lounges. We have already supplied it to a luxury Riviera motor yacht on the Sunshine Coast. Nor is it a secret that Perth has several very large boat building facilities whose clients are from all around the globe. As part of our expansion program our sales team will be pursuing these avenues with some diligence this year – all exciting possibilities. It is going to be a good, productive, challenging and interesting year for us at Switchglass.

Switchable Glass – Vision or Privacy at the Flick of a Switch

Switchable Privacy Glass

New liquid crystal Switchable Privacy Glass can change appearance, allowing any transition between clear and opaque, in milliseconds. It can be used in internal glass wall partitions in Offices and Board Rooms, in Shopfronts and display windows, in Hotel Lobbies and Entrances – anywhere where alternate vision or privacy is required . . . or as a projection flat screen for presentations and movies.

It can go from clear to opaque, transparent to translucent. It can regulate daylight transmission, and with projection it becomes a massive flat-screen with remarkable image clarity – all at the flick of a switch. In its un-switched state, the liquid crystals diffuse light, rendering the glass opaque. When switched, the liquid crystals align, allowing light to transmit without diffusion. Also, by variable voltage control, any state from clear to opaque can be programmed. It is definitely an improvement on curtains and blinds.

When used for projection, the liquid crystals capture and transmit projected images with very high clarity and resolution from very acute angles, providing an ideal display screen for simultaneous front and rear viewing. This allows the possibility at night of your whole shop front window becoming a giant flat-screen, on which you could display your own “tailor-made” advertising features projected from inside your shop.

This product has scope for a multitude of uses.

A live display of Switchable Glass is located at Home Base Expo Subiaco. Visit www.switchglass.com.au for more information.

Electric Glass

Touch Screen GlassSwitchable Privacy Glass is sometimes referred to as Electric Glass but this latter term refers to a whole genre of “wired”, or “electrified” glass incorporating such technology as “touch-screen”, intelligent glass panels.

Switchable Privacy Glass

How Does It Work

Liquid Crystals are dispersed within a formulated polymer film.

When the film is subjected to a flow of electricity from the power control (at the “flick of a switch”), the crystal particles become active and align in a parallel formation. This allows light to pass through, giving you “clear” glass.

When the flow of electricity is stopped, the crystals return to their original positions, blocking the flow of light. Various states in-between can be programmed into the power control.

Switchable Privacy Glass is available in a variety of colours.
